Sierra Service Project 2017: Smith River, California
High School July 1 – July 9 (Middle School August 5 – August 13)
Sierra Service Project (SSP) provides life-changing experiences through acts of service repairing homes and communities. Youth are invited to experience the profound power of serving people who have a culture and life experience different from their own. Church youth groups from many denominations from all over the western states travel to one of the summer sites for an unforgettable week of serving, learning, worship and fellowship! Groups from El Camino Real have participated in about 30 of these projects in 15 years.
Our High School and Middle School groups will be bracketing the summer at Smith River this year. We do repair work on the homes in the communities we serve. The type of work includes home weatherization, building wheelchair ramps and porches, roofing and interior and exterior painting. Work specific to Smith River are beach cleanup and invasive dune grass removal. Work is done in teams of six to ten youth and adult counselors mixed from all the participating churches. Teams work at a home site about 6 hours daily and have one recreation afternoon. Members from the Tolowa Tribe will give a cultural presentation one evening. Evening activities include singing, cultural programs, worship and games.
We will be hosted by the United Methodist Church and Smith River School. Accommodations are sleeping bags on the floor (air mattresses advised). A full preparation packet with additional forms and a packing list will be sent after you register.
Cost of the week is $450 which includes transportation from El Camino Real to Smith River all meals on site and a T-shirt.
Download the Sierra Service Project Application 2017 here and mail it with your non-refundable deposit. Due to the distance to Smith River, we will leave on Saturday to arrive at site on Sunday and leave the site the following Saturday to arrive back home on Sunday. We will stay in a church en route and youth will need money for food on the travel days. Scholarships are available through the Diocese and your local Parish.
