A statement about the Tierras Milperas Lease Termination at All Saints/Cristo Rey

All Saints Cristo Rey Watsonville

A message from Bishop Lucinda and the Rev. Lawrence Robles

All Saints/Cristo Rey Episcopal Church in Watsonville, California has on its property a section leased by Tierras Milperas for a garden. The intent of this agreement was to ensure that people have a place to grow food, learn and enjoy gardening together. Despite misinformation being circulated, the parish wants to emphasize that the garden will remain, under supervision of the people of All Saints/Cristo Rey. The current gardeners will be permitted to harvest their existing crop and they should not experience any loss to access their garden plots. All Saints/Cristo Rey supports the community of Watsonville and wants to be sure that any project with which it is involved benefits vulnerable persons and promotes a healthy and safe environment for the surrounding area.

While the garden has functioned well with the church in the past years, there have been problems with this particular arrangement this year. The church property, of which part is leased by Tierras Milperas, has become increasingly unsafe, both for the gardeners and the surrounding neighborhood. Calls to police have been made frequently by surrounding neighbors due to suspicious activity on the property. The priest and the Bishop’s Committee (Church Board) of All Saints/Cristo Rey have endeavored to work collaboratively with the local leaders of Tierras Milperas to promote safety on the property. However, the situation has become untenable: drug paraphernalia has been left repeatedly on the grounds, there was a credible allegation of rape, and finally a recently hired employee of All Saints/Cristo Rey was found dead under suspicious circumstances on the property. The police are continuing to investigate.

We want to correct some misinformation being circulated by Tierras Milperas and their governing organizations. The gardeners have not been evicted, but the lease with Tierras Milperas is being terminated due to the situations listed above.

The gardeners of Tierras Milperas had an extensive meeting with the parish priest and the Bishop’s Committee (Church Board) of All Saints/Cristo Rey in Watsonville on June 19th to request that the garden lease not be terminated. Unfortunately, the meeting did not result in finding an agreed path forward together, and a collaborative tone was not in evidence.

Day-to-day operations and use of the property rests with the parish clergy and the Bishop’s Committee of that parish, and the bishop does not intervene with those daily happenings. However, after the June 19th meeting, Bishop Lucinda responded to a request, and since has asked 4 times for a set meeting with a key representative of CAN (Community Agroecology Network which supervises Tierras Milperas) and the parish priest of All Saints/Cristo Rey. The purpose of the meeting was to promote understanding and communication between two key persons who oversee the day-to-day happenings of Tierras Milperas on the church property. The CAN representative has declined the meeting; this hinders any opportunity to find a collaborative path forward.

It is the hope of The Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real and the people of All Saints/Cristo Rey in Watsonville, that our desire for the health and safety of those on our property is met with a commitment by the larger community to work collaboratively with All Saints/Cristo Rey. We are committed to ensuring that the basic needs of the people are attended to and that includes, first and foremost, their safety. The Episcopal Church and All Saints/Cristo Rey feel that it is not possible to guarantee the safety of those working the garden, and the surrounding neighbors, under the current circumstances. This has resulted in the termination of the lease with Tierras Milperas.

As people who desire the best for all God’s children, we ask that you join us in working to ensure people are fed and clothed, and that our land remains productive and protected. While this particular arrangement with Tierras Milperas has not worked, we have learned from this effort, and we will move forward to guard and protect the most vulnerable among us.

Faithfully,

The Rev. Lawrence Robles, Priest in Charge of All Saints/Cristo Rey, Watsonville

The Rt. Rev. Lucinda Ashby, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real

Julio, 2022

Fielmente,

El Rvdo. Lawrence Robles, Sacerdote a cargo de All Saints/Cristo Rey, Watsonville

La Rvdisima. Lucinda Ashby, Obispa de la Diócesis Episcopal de El Camino Real
