81st General Convention, Wednesday the 26th
Yesterday was a hard day to top, but the fourth day of General Convention managed it!
Today the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies elected the 28th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. The House of Bishops met at Christ Church Cathedral to hold the vote, and Bishop Sean Rowe was elected after a single ballot.
The House of Deputies confirmed the election quickly and the House of Bishops made their way back to the convention center where Presiding Bishop Elect Rowe addressed the House and any Bishops on the floor with their deputations.
Elections were held in the House of Deputies for members of Executive Council, trustees of the Church Pension Fund, members of the Disciplinary Board for Bishops, Court of Review, and the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop, as well as the treasurer of General Convention. There were still enough resolutions left to consider that an evening session was necessary. The Episco-Disco theme was front and center - with several deputies equipped with glowsticks and light up headbands. HOD President Julia Ayala Harris started the session with a short dance party before the called the house to order.
Two resolutions triggered vigorous debate on the floor - D056 Calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza, and A072 regarding editing the Book of Common Prayer. In the end the House of Deputies voted to concur with the House of Bishops and adopt amended version of both resolutions.
