On Saturday, February 6, about 50 people attended a tenant’s rights workshop at Santa Maria Urban Ministry in San Jose. The workshop was hosted by St. Jude’s Episcopal Church in Cupertino and PACT (People Acting in Community Together). St. Jude’s recently joined PACT as part of its mission covenant to make a greater impact in the community. Speakers included an attorney from the Law Foundation, a PACT organizer, and a PACT member community member.
Another PACT member provided his testimony about his housing. He is a full time employee of a school district, providing translation services in East San Jose, and his rent for a one-bedroom apartment for his family costs more than half of his income. Participants also shared their stories and personal experiences as tenants.
Most of the participants were from the Santa Maria neighborhood, along with parishioners from other PACT-member parishes. Also in attendance were Alfonso Mendez, Santa Maria’s Operations Manager, and The Rev. Peggy Bryan of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Saratoga. St. Jude’s is planning on hosting additional tenant’s rights seminars with PACT, and is considering DeAnza college and senior centers in the Cupertino area.
