Since 2010, members of our diocese have provided support for over 300 students in the Diocese of Western Tanganyika (DWT, our global partner) to attend school. This year has been particularly successful: we supported 702 students! Now we want to continue that support by raising $30,000 for the 2016 school year.
“The past leaders of this ministry, Becky Mikkelsen and Julie Fudge, tirelessly worked to make the program a great success,” explains Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves. “We will be forever grateful for their devotion and diligent efforts in supporting the students of DWT that we have come to know and love. We want to continue building their ministry to better grow the relationship between the dioceses and create meaningful, educational impact in the lives of students and their communities.”
The scholarship fund began in 2009, supporting approximately 300 students. The scholarship program is thriving and continues to grow every year! This past year our goal was to support 500 students; with a larger percentage of female students being supported than male students. We were able to fund 702 students to attend secondary school and college, due to the weakening of the Tanzanian Shilling against the US dollar.
This year organizers Sarah Nordwick and Katie Reeves (seen below with special asst. Willow) are working to get as many churches involved as possible. In addition to raising $30,000 to fund scholarships, they want to better connect the communities in our diocese with Western Tanganyika. The goal is to engage the youth of ECR to bridge the overseas connection. If you know any youth who might want to be involved, or anyone interested in helping lead the scholarship program, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We need your help to continue this record of success as we partner with our brothers and sisters in DWT. Please prayerfully consider making a gift of money or leadership to continue this important ministry. Consider giving a scholarship donation in the name of a loved one as a Christmas gift. Thank you!
